‍ ‍The Chinese Lady by Lloyd Suh -(Costume sketches—UIC)

Pencil, Colorpencil, watercolor, and photoshop, 2023

Plum Blossom (梅) — Resilience, purity, and perseverance in the face of adversity. Blossoming in winter snow, it symbolizes strength of character and an unyielding spirit.

For The Chinese Lady, I drew inspiration from the Four Gentlemen in traditional Chinese art. Rather than reproducing these motifs literally, I translated their symbolic meanings into costume elements that reflect cultural identity, personal dignity, and resilience within the context of the play.

‍ ‍ The Love of Don Perlimplín and Belisa in the Garden-(Costume & Environment Design—UIC)—Photoshop, 2023

Bamboo (竹) — Integrity, humility, and resilience. Hollow at its center and strong at its joints, it symbolizes modesty, flexibility, and unwavering principles.

Orchid (兰) — Elegance, humility, and refined virtue. Flourishing quietly in secluded valleys, it represents inner cultivation and noble character.

Chrysanthemum (菊) — Tranquility, independence, and contentment. Blooming in autumn when other flowers fade, it represents a life free from worldly ambition and at peace with oneself.
