ABOUT （孙佳程）
Hi, I am Sun, a scenic designer and scenic artist originally from Beijing, China. I became increasingly interested in how theatrical space shapes perception and emotional experience. This interest has led me to integrate projection and immersive spatial concepts into my design practice, leading me to explore how audiences construct meaning through their experience of theatrical space. I received my B.A. in Theatre design, production, and technology, with a minor in Economics from the University of Illinois Chicago, and later pursued graduate training at Purdue University.
Recent design credits include scenic design for Broadway-style musical productions at Stagedoor Manor. In 2025, I worked as a scenic artist at Stagedoor Manor bringing a scenic designer’s perspective to the execution of productions. In 2024, I worked and studied at Studio Kloak, expanding my interdisciplinary design practice through furniture design and material experimentation, where I received the first award within the field. My artistic interests were first shaped through experiences in dance and opera, where I developed an appreciation for the environments work together to create meaning. Later I worked with Poly Theatre in Beijing on the Broadway Asia production of An American in Paris, these experiences collectively sparked my interest in the relationship between space, performance, and audience.
As a designer, my design process inspiration from a wide range of sources, including historical periods, picture, text, (oil)-painting, shadow-puppetry, architecture, interior and exterior environments, furniture, food, and other experiences that resonate deeply with me. While I cannot control how audiences ultimately experience a production, I strive to create theatrical environments that invite engagement, reflection, and connection. I am particularly interested in how space design can work in dialogue with performance, allowing actors, space, and storytelling to interact in ways that shape the audience’s experience.
